Telegram's screen sharing feature in group video calls

Image
Telegram remains a solid alternative to  Whatsapp . More recently, it gained video calling smarts   to help bolster its popularity during the pandemic. Now, it’s gunning for video conferencing tools with a new group video calling and screen sharing feature. Users can now convert group voice calls into group video calls by tapping the camera icon on the call screen. Voice calls can still host “unlimited” participants, but only 30 users in a group can participate with video. Telegram notes this limit will “increase soon.” Group admins can also pin a user’s video feed, effectively making it the first screen new users see when joining the video chat. This is available on mobile and desktop, too, and should be useful for teachers hosting online classes. Users can also tap on any one of the users’ video screens to make it fullscreen on their device. Syncing with these improvements is the ability to share screens. Users can tap the three-dot menu button and select...

Fun facts about the Moon

Image
The  Moon  is Earth's only natural satellite. At about one-quarter the diameter of Earth (comparable to the width of Australia), it is the largest natural satellite in the Solar System relative to the size of its planet, the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System overall, and is larger than any dwarf planet Why does the Moon change shape? Phases of the Moon © NASA/Bill Dunford The Moon goes through a series of phases each month, from the new Moon to the full Moon and back again. So why is it sometimes a full circle and sometimes only a crescent – or even not visible at all? The Sun’s light will only hit one half of the Moon at a time, giving it a day side and a night side – just like on Earth. The shape that the Moon appears to us on Earth depends on where it is compared to the Sun. If it’s directly between the Earth and the Sun, then the Sun’s light only falls on the side we can’t see, and so we get a new Moon: it appears completely dark in the sky. However, when the Moo...

What's the biggest freshwater fish in the world?

Image
A beluga sturgeon swimming in a river.  It took three biologists to haul a 240-pound (109 kilograms) fish out of the Detroit River in Michigan last month. The nearly 7-foot-long (2.1 meters) "monster' sturgeon," caught and released by the Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office, could be more than 100 years old. It's a mightily impressive catch for sure, but is it the biggest freshwater fish in the world?  The Detroit River fish is a lake sturgeon ( Acipenser fulvescens ), and while it is believed to be one of the largest ever caught in the U.S., there are much bigger fish swimming in rivers around the world. According to the  U.S. Geological Survey , the planet's largest freshwater fish is the beluga sturgeon ( Huso huso ), living between Europe and Asia in the Black, Azov and Caspian seas, and the rivers feeding them. Beluga sturgeon can reach a maximum length of more than 26 feet (8 m), or about four times as long as a king-size mattress, and weigh u...

Is there any evidence for New Type of Memory?

Image
Source:  Damian Pang / University of Pennsylvania Visual masking renders briefly presented images invisible. New research published in  Scientific Reports  shows that repeating strongly masked stimuli can elicit conscious perception. Visual masking was long held to erase or overwrite memory traces of an image that is briefly presented. This new study indicates that memory traces are likely retained for brief periods of time but with limited conscious access. Visual data can accumulate in the absence of conscious awareness in this memory buffer store and elicit clear perception when sufficient evidence is available. The global workspace theory of consciousness suggests that perception is the result of bottom-up and top-down processes: Top-down directed attention and bottom-up stimulus strength both play an important part in what ultimately enters awareness. This process requires information to be stored subliminally and has led to predictions for the existence o...
